Sanjay
President
Sanjay began grading gemstones during his teenage years, though as a child he had dreamed of becoming a medical doctor. That ambition gave way to a deep and lasting passion for colored gemstones — one rooted in generations of family knowledge.
He grew up watching his father and elder brothers purchase magnificent specimens, enhance their natural beauty through lapidary, and sell them to traders, manufacturers, and retailers across the trade. At seventeen, Sanjay officially joined the business, devoting his apprenticeship years to mastering its various concentrations before traveling across India to meet traders and retailers firsthand.
By twenty-four, he embarked on a global journey — first east to Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore, then west to Paris, Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, Idar-Oberstein, and New York. From 1984 to 1989, his travels narrowed to European and American cities, and it was during one of those trips in the late 1980s that he concluded New York was where he wanted to build his future.
In 1990, Sanjay and his family immigrated to the United States and established a trading office in midtown Manhattan. Over the following three decades, he grew the family business into several divisions — bringing the same devotion and discernment to every procurement and sale.
He is perhaps most proud that his son, Sumeet, and daughter, Priyanka — who runs her own designer and decorative jewelry business, D'Deco Jewels — share his passion and depth of knowledge for gemstones and jewelry.
Sanjay holds deep expertise in important colored gemstones and vintage and contemporary signed jewelry from the world's foremost maisons, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Graff.
For leisure, he enjoys time with family and friends, classical music, and sports and films.
Sumeet
Vice President
Sumeet is a seventh-generation member of the family to operate its gemstone and jewelry business. He holds several vocational diplomas from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Carlsbad, California — including Graduate Gemologist (GG), Graduate Jeweler (GJ), and Applied Jewelry Arts (AJA) — and briefly worked for Tiffany & Co. before rejoining the family business to spearhead its online galleries. He subsequently built an in-house mini-laboratory and created a proprietary rubric to analyze jewels and communicate their characteristics to clients.
In 2013, Sumeet became increasingly fascinated with the rare, antique, and fine jewels he examined at auction sales in New York — sparking an endless pursuit of understanding their origin, craft, and history. He came to believe that true beauty in a jewel is achieved only through the forces of nature and the dedication of many individuals, often unsung. This passion led him to build new tenets for the company around exceptional gemstones, master jewelers, and artisanal craftsmanship, culminating in the launch of RAF with his father.
To deepen his expertise, Sumeet traveled to Basel, Switzerland for an Advanced Training of Colored Stones program at SSEF Laboratory, attended design workshops at Van Cleef & Arpels' L'Ecole School of Jewelry Arts in New York City, and joined The Society of Jewellery Historians in London.
He describes the energy in a jewel as "the power of nature captured for millions of years which is masterfully revealed through humankind's ingenuity." Beyond procuring exceptional pieces, he is equally passionate about educating his clients — something he considers the most critical part of his work.
Sumeet is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Liberal Arts (A.L.B.) in Economics and a Master of Liberal Arts (A.L.M.) in Finance through the Extension School at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His interests span writing, research, education, the environment, and history — with a particular focus on exceptional jewels. He is also a member of the Council of Student Sustainability Leaders through Harvard's Office for Sustainability.
For leisure, Sumeet enjoys reading, listening to lounge music, being outdoors, and spending quality time with his family.
