Natural sapphires, or earth-mined sapphires, are a variety of the mineral Corundum (Aluminum Oxide) and the designated birthstone of September. Derived from the Greek word “sappherios,” sapphires reveal an array of colors, rank 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, and lead tales and legends with their mystical powers. Ranking just next to diamonds in hardness, sapphires are also found suspended inside mechanical watch gears. For centuries, cultures, celebrities, and designers express a unique affinity to this enchanted gemstone. Artistically, Angela Cummings, one of Tiffany & Co.’s featured designers, used sapphires because of their “cool, crisp, and watery feeling.” Most notably, however, is Princess Diana’s engagement ring – an approximately twelve-carat oval-shaped natural sapphire, accented with fourteen round brilliant-cut diamonds, that complimented the natural color of her eyes.
